My Wife's Engagement Ring and Rat Poison

There years ago I had the local jeweler add six diamonds to the band of my wifes wedding ring, five for our children and one for our dog.

The reason we had one for the dog was that we had to have an even number of diamonds.

The dog died from rat poisoning.

Rodent Poison

Do you know those cute little yellow boxes that you poke a hole in, the mice eat the grain and poison and you are free of mice?

Watch out!

The label warned about pets. They were right. It kills them. The pets die a miserably slow death.

We put those cute little mouse-killing boxes where the dog could never get to them. Thats what we thought.

Either the dog somehow got his paw far enough under the bottom shelf of my work bench to pull a box out, or the mice moved it for him.

Either way, my son, who is a veterinarian and two other veterinarians, could not save him.

Dont buy that stuff!

My son treats animals all the time that get in to rat poiso ning. Sadly, one of his clients lost two thoroughbred Horses when they reached the bait while riding in the horse trailer.

The Ring

Be that as it may, my wifes ring popped open like a Horseshoe. Stress on the band probably left by improper annealing allowed it to pop open. The jeweler who placed the diamonds was required by the store owner to do the job over again because he made a mess of things the first time. Lets blame him!

We went to the mall in Twin Falls to do our Christmas shopping. That was the day before Thanksgiving, the best day to shop for Christmas without being trampled to death. (See my article on the subj ect).

There, we studied the zillion Jewelry stores.

I knew that Millers Jewelry had a good technician, so we went there.

We were told we could have the ring in one hour.

After shopping we sat in front of the Jewelry store and waited for the clerk to beckon when the ring was repaired.

I ate one of those pretzels with all the sugar and cinnamon in the world on it. I think the pile of fallen sugar and cinnamon left at my feet was about a foot high.

We were told the repair would take one hour.

After only forty-five minutes out came the technician with the ring.

He said, They really look good when they are cleaned up, dont they.

Wow! He was right. The ring was dazzling. He had popped it into his ultrasonic cleaner.

The repair was perfect.

My wife was thrilled.

The technician was as proud as a new papa.

By doing a great job, he made us all happy.

To tell you the truth, I had my apprehensions. I kne w if he did not do things right that my wife would be very unhappy.

Here is Jones Rule 1017: If your wife is unhappy, you are very unhappy indeed!

I figured what I would say to the technician if the job was not done right: Now Ill have to shoot you!

I figured the odds of my wife being happy after the repair were a zillion to one.

Then out comes that technical genius with the ring shining and in perfect condition.

I wish my wife would stop kissing strange men!

Art forgeries are all mischievous imitations of works of art, used for gaining money from the nave art collectors. Art forgeries are different from art copies. But if you simply ADMIRE the painting itself and dont give a damn whether it is a Monet or not, you should buy it. Afterwards, collecting art is not just a money investment, it also brings aesthetic delight and happiness.

Celebrity Babies Don't Hide Them Parents

Hollywood is full of paparazzi that want to get that perfect picture of a celebrity, so they can sell it to the media and make a lot of money. They will go to almost any length to achieve their goal. Most of the time celebrities are trying to stop the paparazzi from taking their picture, and they get mad when they are followed. Not only do the paparazzi want pictures of celebrities, but they also want pictures of their babies.

I can understand, though, a celebrity wanting to have a private life, and not be bothered all of the time. However they are celebrities, so they should expect a certain amount of intrusion on their private lives. The worst thing a celebrity can do is to try to keep the paparazzi away from seeing their babies.

The reason I believe it is not a good idea for celebrities to keep the paparazzi away from their babies is it just prolongs the amount of time you have to work to keep them away. If a celebrity would just set up a picture shoot for some of the paparazzi to take pictures of their baby, then it would be over with. Also this assures that the picture of your baby is flattering, and you can be proud of that picture for the rest of your childs life. However some celebrities take great pains to keep the paparazzi away from their babies, by keeping them covered up, staying at home, or only going places where the security is too tight for the paparazzi to get a glimpse of their baby. The biggest problem with this is that it is a burden on the parents as well as their baby. Why run around secretly for months, when you can just spend one afternoon with a group of paparazzi and be done with it? Your baby is already going to have a different life, because they are a celebrities baby, but you could make it easier on them if you would just get the whole picture thing out of the way early on.

Who Lives In The Star Wars Galaxy?

It's hard to say where old Hollywood ended and new Hollywood began. People in the industry don't think of themselves as making history, they are just going to work. But the day in 1967 that Jack Warner cleaned out his desk at Warner Bros. studio, George Lucas and Frances Ford Coppola arrived on the lot.

The two young filmmakers were very different in demeanor. Coppola a legend at UCLA film school was 27, a loud boisterous mixture of mogul and marxist, who prided himself in dressing like Fidel Castro. He impressed film executives at first with his bravado, but later would upset them with his reckless overspending. Five years younger, Lucas, who went to USC, was quiet and introspective. The only guys at Warners who were below 30 and wore beards, they hit it off instantly with Coppola taking the mentor role. Lucas had made a thirteen minute science fiction film project called THX 1138, a dark look at a computer controlled future. Coppola convinced his protg to extend it into a full-length film and talked Warner Bros. into financing it.

Over the next few months the wily Coppola played both sides. I'm telling you this kid Lucas is making a great film. Coppola told the Warner brass. Don't put pressure on yourself, they don't expect anything, He reassured Lucas. When they saw the completed THX 1138 the Suits were furious. Francis what is this? I don't know, I've never seen it. replied the bewildered producer. To Lucas's dismay the studio cut out pArts from THX 1138 before they released it. They're cutting the fingers off my baby.

THX failed at the box office and Coppola was held financially liable for $300,000, but the two filmmakers were given another chance to make a low budget movie at Universal. Impressed by the success of Easy Rider (1969) the old guard at the studio was reaching out to new talent, once again Coppola would produce and Lucas would direct. Lucas was encouraged by his wife Marsha to make the second project more p ositive. At USC he had studied anthropology learning that the American male has a unique mating ritual, he drives around in cars trying to pick up girls. Lucas combined this observation, with his own love of classic cars, his small town upbringing in Modesto, CA and his appreciation for top 40 songs played on the radio by disc jockeys like Wolfman Jack. The result: American Graffiti (1973).

The now beloved film got off to a rocky start. It was previewed in San Francisco to young crowd who adored it. After the show Lucas and Coppola waited for the Universal executives to come and congratulate them. Instead they were shocked by angry accusations that they had planted their friends in the crowd and American Graffiti was not releasable. True to their personas Coppola argued and Lucas stood quiet. Once again George saw his film taken away and cut up by what was in his view an interfering, know nothing studio. But there was one difference between THX-1138 and Graffiti; Graff iti was a hit, a highly profitable film that made Lucas a millionaire.

Now Lucas decided to return to science fiction, this time wanting to do a more positive story than THX. After failing to acquire the rights to Flash Gordon, he sat down to write his own screenplay. Influenced by the writings of Carlos Castaneda and the mythology of King Arthur, he based the characters on familiar figures. Luke Skywalker's personality came from George Lucas himself, young, adventurous, and quiet from a small town, with a love of racing cars, or in this case space pods. Han Solo was based on Francis Ford Coppola. He was loud, cocky, reckless, always in debt, going through a love-hate relationship with the younger Skywalker. And the empire was actually the Hollywood studios. George Lucas striving for his creative freedom as a filmmaker would parallel Luke Skywalker's journey to win liberty from the empire, and both would achieve it thanks to Star Wars.

Arrival at the 40th Signal Battalion (Construction) Long Binh

From the 90th Replacement Battalion seven or eight of us were taken to the 40th Signal Battalion Headquarters which was also on Long Binh. Our in-processing took several days. A Master Sergeant Ladd was in charge of our group. As long as we kept our hair cut and made police call he left us alone. This was greatly appreciated by all. You do not meet a good NCO such as this very often.

Nothing of any consequence happened during in-processing. Mike Massey from Dodge City Kansas and myself were made to leave the EM club for drinking a rum and coke. We were not yet 21 and this was the age limit for booze. Hard to believe you were in Vietnam and could only drink beer if you were under 21. Later I found out that most EM clubs did not have such a rule.

Near completion of in-processing I found out I was going to Qui Nhon on the central S. Vietnam coast. I did not know what to expect or how I was going to get there at the time. I later learned that I was to fly to Qui Nhon with Massey, Carpenter, and Baker. I have forgotten if anyone else went along for the ride. We were driven to Tan Son Nhut AFB in Saigon where we caught a C-130 to Qui Nhon. This was my first experience with troop seats and would not be my last by a long shot. We arrived in Qui Nhon in the evening, Id say around 2030 hours. None of us had eaten since breakfast.
