The White Pigeon & The Drunk With Commentary

1) The White Bobber Pigeon [de: Favorita Caf de Miraflores, Lima, Peru

The White Bobber [Pigeon bobs (up and down), as he slowly walks the sidewalk (in Lima, Peru): pacing to and fro (bobbing his head forward and back): to and froeating crumbs that Juan throws onto the walk in the front of his restaurant; amazing I think, to watch this dumb creature walk right up to him, eating (not even chewing), swallowing those big hunks of bread: this white dirty-winged pigeon.

Somehow I get the notion this White Bobber pigeon can reason: is he entertaining me and Juan? Perchance he has forgotten hes just a dirty winged pigeon?

#1346, 5/11/06, 5:45 PM Thursday, at the Favorita Caf, de Miraflores, Lima, Peru.

2) Everlasting [The Drunk

Tail of his eye
Eyes like dirty yellowish
Clay marbles
The tail endfixed
Whispers (bs) then waits
Help!
Like a hog with his
Throat cut; a
Cigarette shaped into
The weedswiping
His trouser-cuffs
The shadows crawl
Up to his knees
Wrist-deep, it sinks into
His flesh!

[Commentary It sometimes gets to me, watching nature mix with its creatures and humans, all mixed together; the earth saying: lets become one; the earth breeds, breathes for us, as it does for the lesser creatures than us, I do believe. It is alive, amongst many other brothers and sisters it has in its solar system. And our solar system is part of a galaxy, which is in comparison to a larger body, surrounded by constellations and the Universe as a whole; perhaps the universe is the body, and earth but a cell within it, no more. If Earth is wounded, so are its nuclear family: Mars, Saturn, and Mercury, and so forth and so on; it is earths birthright, to be part of the bigger picture (in that capacity), to support us, as w are weaker, but blessed beings from the Most High; we are quite dependent on her, ar e we not? As if she was a mother, our unspeaking mother you might say; should she have an abortion, God help us all.

Nebuchadnezzar and the Antichrist Dedicated to: FEMI TEMILOLA of: OYO STATE NIGERIA

Like Nebuchadnezzar, the Antichrist will demand (in times of the gentiles, which are now and was back then) that he be worshiped (See Revelation: 13:14); we are coming nearer to this stage called idolatry, as the state of religion in the world becomes more powerful (An example might be: Islam, would like to have the world bend their knees to their god, as they have pointed out in the near past, at the threat of death even).

The image of the beast is seen in the book of Daniel as well as Revelation, mentioned by Daniel as well as Jesus The abomination of desolation. This will of course take place in the Holy of Holies, of the Tribulation temple in Jerusalem, when the temple goes up, look for this sign soon.

If you want to see the beast, look in Daniel 8 and 11, and his number in Revelation 13: 18. The sixth day can be considered the Beasts day, and the Seventh, Gods if indeed we wish to look at things in the perspective of numbers.

Satan has always repro duced, or duplicated, Gods word, Christs words, and works: He will of course try this again, and that is why he is called The Antichrist after all. We dont have dates for his arrival, but I expect between 2007 and 2016, we will feel the tempest of Gods anger, and Satans indifference and determined mind to try and corner in on his destiny as the beast. (For reference see: Revelation 19:20 and 20:10). Again I must say Nebuchadnezzar was much like the Antichrist will be, much like Saddam was trying to beactually Saddam thought he was the new Nebuchadnezzar by trying to rebuild Babylon.

Another prophecy is that in the later days, someone will try to rebuild Babylon, but according to the Bible, it will never be completely achieved, and it has not been thus far.

Magic Spells

Human perception of magic and those that practice it has been skewed by popular culture and literature. It is only recently that witches have received some positive highlights and horrible hags of yesteryears are finally receiving their due.

Magic refers to control of external circumstances through mental means and anyone who practices magic is called a witch. Spell is the witchs word for prayer because like a prayer a spell is an appeal to the higher powers for the fulfillment of a desire. Thus, a spell is a way of worship and need to be enacted with the dignity a sacred rite deserves. The way a spell is cast depends up on the complexity of desire and it can be as simple as chanting an incantation or as elaborate as fertility dance. However, there are some basic methodologies that apply to all spells.

The first step to magic spell is to consult the phase of the moon to determine the appropriate time for performing the spell. On the chosen day the witch casts a circle and calls of the four quarters. This basically means that the witch consecrates the space with circular (or spherical) boundaries and evokes the spirits and Gods within that space to bless their magic. The manner in which this is done depends entirely on the witch. The next step refers to the offerings given to please the Gods and direct them towards the hearts desires. These include candles, herbs, crystals and essential oils among other things. For instance, in a spell to attract wealth, there are green or gold candles, herbs like patchouli and dill and the crystal that works best is malachite. It is not necessary to have all these things present since obtaining them can be an expensive affair. If the intent is sincere enough, even the most minimalistic ritual will work. The same ritual may need to be repeated over a number of days to achieve results. Before the spell is concluded, the quarters need to be thanked then sent away and the circle has to be closed.

It is essential to remember that magic works on the principle of what goes round, comes round and so individuals need to be careful what they wish for.

Basic Knowledge on Pop Art Paintings

Pop art was an art movement that initially occurred in the United States of America in the early sixties. The epicenter of this art phenomenon was New York, the city confirming its trend setting leader position. Although this movement strongly erupted in the early sixties, the attempts of change started during the late fifties in the work of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. These painters wanted to replace the abstract mode of artistic expression, aiming at making the arts message easier to be understood by the public. The first pop art paintings contained easy to recognize images of common items. The purpose of incorporating these objects was to mock the gravity, the metaphysical dullness of abstract expressionism that had started to become out of fashion. Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg introduced amusing objects into the first pop art paintings: flags, maps and targets or stuffed animals and rubber tyres for the latter artist. The pop art movement become famou sly known for their main feature: mockery and irony.

Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein were the most representative artists for this new art stream. Their pop art paintings were characterized by their original display of popular cultures symbols: advertisements, media images or even comic strips. These new, colorful, lively pop art paintings were strikingly opposing the gravity, the spirituality of abstract expressionism. Consequently, these kinds of pop art paintings become very popular among the art loving public and among the art critics community. But the abstract expressionism continued to be highly appreciated, despite the pop art paintings mockery.

Although the pop art movement was popular and influential it proved to lack the strength of completely supplant the abstract expressionism, but it determined the birth of two new schools of abstraction: color-field painting and minimalist art. The color-field painting movement (m ainly represented by painter Helen Frankenthaler) minimized the influence of abstract expressionisms old features into a style completely committed to the use of pure color.

The American art of the sixties remained in the art history books as a period of constant rivalries between different competing styles and ideas. Yet, the pop art paintings represented best the ideas and the symbols of the American lifestyle in the sixties.

Sock It To 'Em: The Sock Puppet Revolution

The other day I realized that I had an odd number of Socks in my sock drawer. And by that I do not mean that I had twelve Socks, although twelve is a strange number. In reality, the number of Socks was such that one sock did not belong to a pair. My first inclination was to throw it out. My second inclination, however, was to keep it just in case:

A. I might want to wear two Socks on one foot and one sock on the other. This would prove valuable when I want to make one foot jealous in the winter.

B. I want to wear a sock on one foot but not on the other. This would prove valuable when I want a blister, or when I take it too literally that a person is going to sock me.

This aside, there are many other purposes for a stray sock. So many, in fact, that people will now start losing Socks on purpose just to have a reason to utilize the tips below:

1. Everyone knows that Socks can easily be turned into sock Puppets with a few adjustments and a couple of eyeballs (not real ones). Few know, however, that sock Puppets can be turned back into Socks. This means that you can take your old sock Puppets out of your closet in case of an emergency when you need an extra sock. Don't have a closet? Then check under your bed. Don't have a bed? Then check your closet. Don't have a sock puppet? That's impossible...

2. Aside from everything, nothing makes a better oven mitt than a sock. But this shouldn't be just any sock. Rather, this sock should have plenty of Holes in it. Never will taking fo od out of the oven be so exciting...

3. Use the sock as a boxing glove by stuffing it with two others Socks and your hand. While this might seem like a waste of three Socks, it's more a waste of your hand...

4. Use the sock as a bracelet by tying it into a loop. Decorate it further by hanging from it one or all of the following: a Slim Jim, two Slim Jims, grapes, a sharpened pencil, or another sock...

5. Host a sock hop. Simply invite the local kangaroos and their joeys, each of which will look quite attractive wearing the Socks that you give to them upon entrance. If some sor t of disturbance arises, end the party immediately. After all, you supplied the Socks...

But I digress.

Exam 70228 Installing Configuring and Administrating MicroSoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition

This exam tests your skills required to install, configure and administrate MS SQL Server 2000, Enterprise Edition. The targeted audience is candidates with one or more year of experience administrating and implementing relational data base in a medium to large computing environment. In other words, you should be fairly familiar with the SQL relational concept before you start this exam. It will be a rough road if you have no idea what a tables or data bases or indexes means!

Why take the SQL exam? There is no question that MS SQL Server is tied in the .net world. Furthermore, if you look at Windows Rights Management System, that safeguard digital information from unauthorized use and protection of sensitive information, such as Web content, documents, and e-mail, you will notice that it employed SQL Server as its data base. In other words, more and more applications will employ SQL server as its database engine! Before you start the project, check the official MS Ex am objective at http://www.microsoft.com/learning/exams/70-228.asp for detail information. You can obtain the necessary material or training by attending the following Instructor-led courses:

Course 2071: Query MS SQL Server 2000 with Transact-SQL
Course 2072: Administering a MS SQL Server 2000 Database
Course 2073: Programming a MS SQL Server 2000 Database

Exam Vital Statistics

Number of Questions:..........................45
Time:............................................. ..105 min
Level of Difficulty:..............................8/10
Score format:....................................Numeric score
Passing grade:...................................700

Preparation Setup

Two PC(P4) for two SQL servers connected through Cable modem router
MS Press: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 System Administration Exam 70-228
SAMS: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 unleashed
MSPress: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Technical Reference Libra ry
MSPress: Book-On-line.
Addison-Wesley: SQL Queries for Mere Mortals
Apress: SQL Server Stored Procedures Handbook
Addison-Wesley: The Gurus Guide to SQL Server Stored Procedures, XML, and HTML

Reading data base books can drive your eyes red and dry some time. There is so much material in relational data base technology arena that you can read for weeks or months without ever approaching your exam target date! We all have different educational background and study habit, check out your local libraries and book stores for the best study material suitable for you!

A practical approach would use MSPress: Exam 70-228 as a starter and SAMS: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 unleashed as a secondary source. First read and do the lab exercises in MSPress: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 System Administration Exam 70-228 book. Pay careful attention to the setup parameters or options. Do not skip a single exercise! The exercises are designed with certain amount of dependence. The exercises are designed to run on a single SQL server, however, you will gain more insight if you change the exercises with the two SQL Servers approach! It is a good idea to try this on your second time and not on the first time lab exercise especially for linked servers and replications testing.

Books On Line or BOL came with the SQL Server software. It is indispensable and free! The Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Technical Reference Library is a six volumes set BOL without the on line portion. I got a used copy from EBay for only $35. In the MSPress 70-228 exam book, many references were made to MSPress: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Administrators companion . It is very readable reference and a good item to add to your library. The only reason I did not pick up the book because I have too many DB reference books in my library. Next read the SAMS: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 unleashed. Make sure you load the sample data bases to practice your SQL commands and u tilities. You will find the reading at faster pace. Read the other books as you approaching the subject of your interest, such as stored procedure. You may pick up additional material on Data Transformation Services (DTS). If your Transact-SQL experience is light, consider to buy a copy of SAMS: Teach yourself Transact-SQL in 21 Days to get a more comprehensive hold on Transact-SQL. It is not a bad idea to start coding your own stored procedures and more esoteric Transact-SQL queries. Although you will not need a working knowledge of stored procedures and Transact-SQL for 70-228 exam, Youll need that skill for the 70-229 exam!

After you completed the intensive reading, go back and do the Readiness Review Exam in part 2 of MSPress 70-228 exam. I also used the Transcender exam as an additional practice source.

Here is some note I gathered during my study you may find it useful in your own preparation.

Installing and Configuring SQL Server 2000

Careful consideration and planning are required for your installation. It would be wise to have an installation plan and objectives in place. Not only used as documentation, but for performance tuning and disaster recovery later. Do you need fault tolerant for your installation? Can it be done with stand-by server, or cluster? What is the default collation, file locations, number of instance and service accounts in the setup?

How can you install SQL Server 2000 to co-exist with SQL 6.5 and SQL 7.0? What is the migration path?

What are net-libraries and their limitations? When do you need to use Multiprotocol instead of TCP/IP? How do you assign the proper rights for SQL Server Service and SQLAgentMail?

Can you execute your queries against your linked server(s) or formerly known as remote server(s)?

Creating SQL Server 2000 Databases

When you configure the databases pay attention to performance options such as disk capacity, network connectivity, and physical drive placement. One of key to database performance is the location of transaction log, primary and secondary file group. Youll be bombarded with many questions on this topic alone! What is the purpose of this database? Are they read-only or transactional?

SQL Server 2000 supports a number of methods to enforce data integrity; this includes data types, NOT NULL, DEFAULT definition, IDENTITY properties, constraints, rule, indexes, primary, foreign keys, and triggers. Make sure you know when to apply them. You will be test on these concepts in more detail later in exam 70-229.

Managing, Monitoring and Troubleshooting SQL server 2000 Databases

Monitor your database performance by using System Monitor, SQL Profiler and Enterprise Manager. What can you monitor using System Monitor vs SQL Profiler? Can you use both metho ds to monitor your SQL server? Do you know how to setup alerts so you will be notified?

Do you have a backup/recovery plan in place? Can you fully recover up to the time of failure? Can you recover the magical system state data?

Practice and rehearse your disaster recovery plan! Execute your DBCC CHECKDB, CHECKTABLE, SHOWCONTIG and other DBCC commands until you have them on your finger tips.

Do you know how to troubleshoot SQL transaction locking by using Transact-SQL, SQL Profiler or SQL Server Enterprise Manager?

Extracting and Transforming Data

When you setup IIS Virtual directories to support XML dont forget the security! Know how to export and import data by using Data Transformation Services (DTS), Bulk copy program, Bulk Insert and distributed queries.

Develop your schedule your DTS packages. When interacting with other SQL database or data source, be careful about the data type and precision, and collation.

Check the replicat ion services! Know how to setup DTS using GUI is important but how about UDF?

Know your replication inside out. You must be fully comprehend snapshot, merge, and transactional replication without any hesitation!

Managing and Monitoring SQL Server 2000 Security

What is the difference between Windows Authentication and Mixed modes? Allowance must be made to clients connectivity (internal vs internet), Client operating system, security requirement and infrastructure.

How is spgrantlogin differs from spdbaccess?

How do you control your database access? Are you using server role, database, and application or user role to control security access? May be your application required more granular control by going into object permissions?

Can you audit your security setting by using SQL profiler or C2 Auditing. What will happen to your SQL Server if your audit log is full?

Managing, Monitoring and Troubleshooting SQL Server 2000

How is yo ur SQL server behaving? Notice any system bottlenecks in Disk I/O, network connectivity, memory, paging, and transactional throughput from your monitoring software?

What SQL transaction caused that system lockup? Does this problem stemmed from coding, database structure or programming logic? Perhaps, it is time to review that database schema and indexes!

Now, you can use your knowledge on DBCC INDEXDEFRAG, DBREINDEX, SHRINKDATABASE, and SHRINKFILE or modify that database schema or recode that Transact-SQL statement!

No doubt, the above note is just a tidbit and is far from complete. Exam 70-228 is one of enjoyable preparation I even did. It encompasses a fairly large territory involving Windows 2000 knowledge, IIS/XML, SQL database structure, and connectivity expertise. How involved will depend on your own personnel requirements. It is not an easy test! Please note that this exam required you have some hand on experience on the SQL Server 2000. So allocate sufficient time for study and lab exercises. Definitely, Ill not recommend this exam to be taken as a first MCSE test, youll struggle with server setup, MAPI profiles,..etc.

If you passed the test, it is only the beginning to the world of MS SQL, check some of the following web sites for additional SQL information:

MSDN SQL Server 2000
dbforums
SQL Server Magazine
SQL Server Central
SQL-Server-Performance.com

Hope you have established a good relation with MS SQL and start your journey on the right note!

Unleashed

For Jet Li fans Unleashed will not be a disappointment. It has all the necessary elements to keep his fan-base happy: fights, fights and more fights. But Unleashed offers something else Jet Li fans may not have been expecting from their favorite superheroacting. Yes Jet Li actually acts in this new film something we have rarely seen from him in his American endeavors but definitely a nice surprise.

Unleashed tells the story of Danny (Jet Li) a man trained as an attack dog and used by a low level enforcer to ensure that those who owe him money are paying on time and in full. Danny is treated like a dog in every way from the cage he sleeps in, to the food hes given to eat out of the can, to the collar that he wears around his neck. And the collar is where all the trouble lies: Collar on, Danny is docile and manageable. Take the collar off and Danny is a ferocious killer who is not going to stop until all that he has been told to attack is dead.

After a series of unfortunate events, Danny escapes and his found and taken in by a family Stanley (Morgan Freeman) a blind piano tuner and his daughter Sasha a musical prodigy studying at a prestigious music academy. Of course Dannys owners discover where hes at and all hell breaks loose as they try to get him back and Danny tries to protect the family he has come to love.

All in all, the movie is entertaining enough. The fight scenes as to be expected are amazing. There was one sequence early in the movie when Danny is Unleashed on some folk who were trying to shaft his handler and the whup ass they experienced was priceless. But like many Movies with excessive levels of fighting the scenes soon become repetitive and predictable.

The other problem with the fighting is this: Why didnt someone just shoot Danny? I dont know about you but if I knew this loan shark that I owed money to, had this hitman if you will, who didnt use a gun but was essentially a trained fighter, Id shoot him on sight. As a matter of fact I would but out a hit on Danny to ensure that I never would have to deal with him again. Apparently, however, none of the other criminals in the movie thought about that and suffered greatly for it.

I will say the Jet Lis acting was pretty good. Danny is a charact er that has been sorely mistreated and is quite unfamiliar with any aspect of the world other then violence. Watching him learn how to grocery shop or his first experience with ice cream was sweet and touching. Li did an excellent job portraying a man who is experiencing kindness for the first time, add to that his youthful appearance and the difficulty in determining his age, Dannys childlike behavior and wonder at the world is all the more believable.

All in all if youre a Jet Li fan this is the movie for you. Youll get the fighting you want and the chance to enjoy your favorite action hero flexing his acting chops. If youre not a fan, stay home. Its not really the movie for you and youll probably enjoy it as a rental more then spending your time and money at the theatre.

History of the Viennese Waltz

The Viennese Waltz is a Dance performed to music with three beats to the bar. This means that the Dance steps can be very difficult for starters because when a step is taken on each beat, then the next bar will have to start on the opposite foot. However, when this technique is mastered, the Dancer acquires an enchanting and romantic rhythm.

The first Dance of a three-fourth beat on record was Danced to folk music called the Volta. The Dance was a peasant folk Dance from a provincial area in France in 1559. The Volta, however, is also claimed to be a folk Dance from Italy during this time. The word Volta is an Italian word that means the turn. This shows that even in its earliest form, the waltz involves a couple turning while dancing. The Volta became well-known in the royal courts of Western Europe during the 16th century. It was described as similar to the Galliard, which is a Dance performed to music with a 3/2 beat, but instead Danced to a slower 6/4 beat. They are similar because both Dances make five steps to six beats, therefore the Dancers need to alternate feet in alternate measures.

The partners in the Volta are in a closed position but the lady is positioned at the left of the man and is held by the waist. The lady places her right arm on her partner's shoulder and holds her skirt with her left hand. Holding the skirt is an important part of the Dance because the frequent turning and lifting may cause the skirt to fly up. The lifting was done by the man using his left thigh which is positioned under the lady's right thigh. This lift is demonstrated in the famous painting where Elizabeth I of England is dancing the Volta and is lifted by the Earl of Lancaster.

There is also a contemporary Norwegian Waltz which is a folk Dance similar to the Volta because it is also a turning Dance. Although, in this Dance, the couple is required to do a step around their partner and doing this would mean that each would have to take large steps to be able to get around from one side of their partner to the other. In this waltz, the man assists his partner in the big step by lifting her as she takes the step therefore accommodating gracefully the difference in leg length between partners. When this lift is incorporated in the Volta, the couple was required to hold each other in a very tight embrace. The level of intimacy produced was deemed immoral by Louis XIII and banned the action from court on this account.

The Volta evolved from a three-time and became a five-time. One of the first Dances in three-time that were published was the Hole in the Wall in 1695. The first music played for the actual Waltzen was in Germany in 1754. However, any link between the Volta ad the Waltzen is unclear, although the word Waltzen also means to revolve in German.

The Waltzen, as written by Arndt in 1799, is performed by Dancers who held on to their long gowns to prevent them from dragging or being stepped on. The Dancers would lift their dresses and hold them high like cloaks and this would bring both their bodies under one cover. This action also required the Dancers' bodies to be very close together and this closeness also attracted moral disparagement. Wolf published a pamphlet against the Dance entitled Proof that Waltzing is the Main Source of Weakness of the Body and Mind of our Generation in 1797. But even when faced with all this negativity, it became very popular in Vienna. Large Dance halls like the Zum Sperl in 1807 and the Apollo in 1808 were opened to provide space for thousands of Dancers. The Dance reached England in 1812 and was introduced as the German Waltz and became a huge hit. Throughout the 19th century, the Dance gained further fame with the music of Josef and Johann Strauss.

Nowadays, the Viennese Waltz is Danced to music with a tempo of about 180 beats a minute. However, it has a restricted range of figures which are the Change Steps, Passing Changes, Hesitations, Hovers, the Contra check and the Natural and Reverse Turns.

Falling Apart a Message to Kate Moss

Supermodel Kate Moss, career has fallen apart, in the last week, after we saw pictures of her apparently taking enormous amounts of cocaine. She has already lost lucrative contracts with H&M, Burberry and Chanel; a multi-million dollar contract with cosmetic giant Rimmel still hangs in the balance. Kate has back into rehab and apologized promising to get her life back on track.

Good Luck. Kate you are a great model and I know that most people wish you the best in your recovery, here are my tips for a successful journey.

Accept what you cannot change.

We have all seen the pictures so we know that you have been taking drugs, make the past history. You have a problem with drugs and you need to deal with it before it gets completely out of control. You might have thought that nobody could see the damage you are doing to yourself. Perhaps because you have got away with it for so long you have been kidding yourself. Keep taking drugs at the rate you have been a nd they will kill you.

Be honest with yourself.

By all means do a TV interview, but there is no need to drag others into it. Dont try and blame anyone else even if you feel you have been badly let down. Inspire us with your honesty about your addiction; we will respect you for it. Act with integrity, you dont need the money. Maybe you dont want to work as much as you are now; perhaps the price you have paid is too high already.

Get clean and sober for yourself first.

In order to be the best mum, to Lila Grace, you need to be selfish and put your recovery first. You are not a bad person, just someone who has got completely out of control.

Seek professional help.

A professional will help you with the many emotions that start to surface as you sober up. Dont forget there are many well known people who have trodden a similar path to you and have managed very successfully and privately to get off drugs and alcohol, use their experiences.

You are only human.

Thank goodness, you have started to show us your vulnerability, now show us your courageous side. In 6 months time we will forgotten all the sordid images we have seen.

Act as a role model.

Kids everywhere look up to you. Even if every other person in the fashion industry or in the city indulge coke, show them there is life after drugs. You will still be Kate and inspire thousands to follow you.

Trust others.

Your work will come back, if you show your sponsors you have changed. You will be able to leverage your recovery in a very powerful way if you choose to.

Enjoy the journey.

Discover things about yourself you might not like as well as things you actually do like about yourself.

Dump all the people who have colluded with your drug taking.

Your friends who have been keeping you safe have resulted in your addictions spiraling out of control.

Sorry is the hardest word to say.

Make amends to those you really care about and have caused upset to. You can do this by just staying clean and sober.

After Eve Part Seven: The Stone Builders

The Stone-Builders [By their Weapons

[Big-chest was a reluctant hero, for the most part, that is, in killing the Stone-Builders; yet when he could, he did so of course, --but I say reluctant I suppose with reluctance; for it was not unlike everyone at this time to be disinclined to kill them, they seemed to be in the vein of the gods, un-killable: yet he killed them and fought them, more so than anyone elseless out of conviction than out of desire to avoid dishonor and social embarrassment for himself.

Said I [I, being: Short-legs, I had seen one time Big-chest walk into a campsite of theirs, the Stone-Builders that is, I tried to tell this story to my brother, Stern-toes, once, but I never could explain it right, but I think he got the jest of it, if not the seriousness, we did both laugh at the Stone-Builders for hours on end, afterwards. As I was about to say, myself and Little-eyes witnessed this whole happening from a distance of course. The Stone-Builde rs were full of what they called: wone, or wine, something along that order, some sounds take me back a bit, they had new sounds all the time, yes O yes, inventing new sounds like the growing of leafs on a tree, coming into our brains like new winds, dragging it into a mode of thinking more everyday, instead of being fond of the birds, and just living: eating, sleeping and dyingthese words we never heard of before were floating everywhere in the air, ever since that is, the arrival of the Stone-Builders on the scene: before this, before Eve walked out of that Garden, things were dangerous, but much more quiet.

Well, Big-chest, noticed one eveningnot being too far in the thick of the foliage by their campsite [the Stone-Builders sitethey had killed a man-eater [lion; there were four of them, called soldiers, at the campfire-site, a resting place to them: just laughing, and drinking, and being playful like a group of little cubs: lion cubswild and whimpering [whiny lio n-cubs, that is exactly what they were like. I could see Big-chest laughing to himselfinside that big muscular oversized chest: as he watched them wrestle around with one another, actually they did get a little over physical with one another, like the wild boars whom would chase after one of us, wanting to eat us for a feast, and then theyd settle down again. It was a cold winters night that day, so there was a real chill in the air, and not all that much leafy undergrowth for us to hide or for that matter to slap the chill away: nor for that matter Big-chest: although he had a coat of hair all over him to keep him warm anywaysshowed a bit of chill in his face also. AlthoughI was grateful for the few large trees with the plant-life tucked around me, it absorbed some of the windthe brisk, cold winds seeping by us, around us, and almost through us: the shrubbery covered us, as we remained in the distant woods, with a pile of leaves up to our knees: leaves for warmth and camo uflage, --camouflage being a plan incase we figured wed have to duck, hide ourselves-quickly should they get the best of Big-chest, but we doubted that: Big-chest was just the opposite of us----mean,--plus

as always, Big-chest was confident of his abilities, he stood in the woods, no shadownot sure what he did with it, but he was cleaver; just a big blob of muscle, hair and sharp eyes, small squinty eyes pinned on the four Stone-Builders, at the camp site, and their man-eater, that was going to be his dinner. He was actually blocking our vision a bit, but I think he did that because he wanted to show his audiencewhich was uswho was the braver. I actually had some kind of a feeling for those men who were about the meet Big-chest, a gloomy feeling at best, and a thankful feeling: thankful, it was not us in their place; yet both I and Little-eyes, both surely held feelings of revenge for the Stone-Builders, and this was kind of a good time for the revenge to seep out, b ut I dont care for revenge for the most part, not really, it takes too much energy, saps youin review, all was quite mysterious to me.

Then unsuspected, he walked into the camp, tall as a mountain, hairy as a leafy think forest, long, a very long mouth from ear to ear, his teeth showedhe walked reminiscent of the king of the Stone-Builders [I think he was mimicking himhe like to do such things, he must have seen him walk, for he was arched just like their king, head back, eyes slanting down as if they were subordinates; --among the four he crept up, not a word, not a sound, the dark-dragging behind him, the sky had very little light given by the stars, but it followed him overhead none the less, a cloud covered the moonas if he and Big-chest were pals; now he had seen their weapons by the fire, where the dead lion lay, if anything, Big-chest was shifty: sly, observant: he was swaying his body akin to the huge trees in a storm, not sure exactly why, but I think it got his blood moving and his limbs more flexible for swinging when he used them for clubsand it made for a good showing: his hands were as big as large branches of a tree: and as hard. Closer and closer he came to the fire, no one noticed him yet, cant figure it out, no one, no one at all, --could they not hear him a little, just a tiny bit, I asked myself, for both myself and Little-eyes could hear his foot steps even in the woods, at twice their distance, I was about to learn we had better hearing than these new creatures. But then this new breed of course, can not have all the advantages, thank goodness, thus, our senses were better, we were tuned higher one might say, and they were tuned with more and a higher intelligence than we.

His fingers now, almost touching the groundI could seehe, he had long thick arms, and fingers, and perturbing muscles, he was impressive to look at, huge to digest with your eyes, and frightening if you did not see him on a daily bases, and dangerous to be around, at any time. Then all of a sudden two of the four turned their necks to see what was in back of them; not sure if they heard him, sensed him, or just did out of an automatic military checking ritual,--whereupon, they almost went into shock: two stood up, all four were some fifteen feet from their weapons. The two who were squatting, the closest to the fire, were in a panic, the other two were a little farther away, standing now, unsure, thinking. I think one was releasing himself; he made a puddle and was trying to cover it up by kicking dirt, how modest. I figured why waste your time, this was precious time, run, run, run: that is what Id do, but I really was hoping theyd not run, I must have an evil side in me also, just like them; you know, they got this pride thing, and I was hoping they would stay with this pride and arrogance, and then as I stopped thinking for a moment, Big-chest knock it out of them, if that is, they had any pride left. I t hink I was starting to get like them, that being: aggressive thoughts.

In any case, Big-chest took his right hand swung it backwards to build up momentum, and with the force of a giant tree, hit the head of one of the squatters as he was about to stand up, it sounded faintly similar to thunder, and I could hear it snap, and rip, similar to a timber falling after lightening strikes it, strikes a tree out of its roots, its stretching roots out of the ground. He fell on his chest, then pushing himself, flopped over and onto his shoulder as if it had nothing holding his head in place, like a dead fish flopping, jumping in a creekhe lost his inner breath. The other one tried to get to his weapon, but Big-chest, akin to lightening, jumped with one leap over to him, picked him up by one leg, his penis showing, as Big-chest looked strangely at it, as if to laugh at a small ugly worm, for they all liked covering them up for some odd reason, and Big-chest now must have figured o ut, he knew why. And we both in the bushes started to giggle, snicker, laughing at the sightI wanted to say laugh againbut we had to hold our laughing inside our stomachs for a while, so as not to spoil his feat. Then after our expressions of amusement, a stern grin appeared on Big-chests faceI think he heard usin any case, he tossed him into the fire when he got bored looking at him, after twisting him about for a few seconds, breaking his leg in several places I imagine, for I kept hearing crunches, as if bones were cracking, and then there was his screams.

Then one of the two standing routed himself through the woods yelling something on the order of: Hhhhh eel pppp...! Not sure what that meant. The last one, I call him the brave one, or definitely I could call him the stupid one, or should I say foolish one, none-the-less, he pulled out a sharp object, about the length of his hand, and stood in front of Big-chest as if he was going to fight him. At this point I said, and Little-eyes thought: this was the end for him; he [the soldier looked like a banana compared to Big-chest. I asked myself, Is he crazy? Run, and run while you can, and I was on Big-chests side now, more than ever, but it didnt sound like it for that split-moment, but I felt it was a little unfair, size and all. But the man, whom I am calling a brave-soldier, stood his ground, and actually looked at Big-chest in the eyes. My-gosh, the man must have been half his size, about 175 pounds, quick on his feet though, for he was dancing around Big-chest, trying to stab him, and poke him. He looked more like a bee trying to sting someone, but that just irritated him more. Big-chest had taken arrows out of himself one-hundred times before, I bet; arrows deeper than that knife would have ever penetrate, if the person had gotten a chance to lunge it into Big-chest, and he didnt get that chance: and it never hurt him much: those pokes. These little wounds were nothing, --but should he leap and get a good stab possible in the upper chest of Big-chest, or eye, then Id worry.

To make a long story short: Big-chest just looked dumfounded at the figure in front of him dancing in a circle, and didnt move very much, except around; Ive seen Little-eyes close his eye-lids now, he knew, he knew what was about to happen, and with his waving quick long arms, Big-chest picked up the seven foot lionesses, and put it over his shoulder, the crazy Stone-Builder charged at him, and Big-chest with a quick sweep, with a turn, knocked the man flat on his back, onto the ground, he had hit him with the man-eater, as he balanced it over his shoulder. Then, somewhat, disparate, or so it seemed, reminiscent of a dying fish jumping about trying to get back into the waterhe: Big-chestkicked him in the mid-section of his belly, sweeping him into the fire like trash, now almost a dead fish. The Soldier could not move, he surely had a broken spine I thought, had he not, he would had gotten up and run fast out of the fire, and he didnt: or couldnt, for Big-chest couldnt run with the man-eater on his shoulder so it was a good time to escape, if he could. But he didnt, or couldnt, nor do I think he intended to. But again, the man tried to move out of the fire with no suitable means other than his arms which were now on fire, for surely his ribs and legs were broken. Big-chest simply turned away from him as if he was insignificant, as I did myself. The defeat was predictable, and most unnecessary. I got thinking: what kind of creature fights when they cannot compete. It has always been the law of the landto run, unless cornered: hence, when you cant battle, dont. It wasnt necessary to die like that. I was learning about pride and arrogance quickly from these new creatures though; all in time and observation I told myself, and Id be well informed on their unusual habits.

Early winter

We had no way of knowing whi ch winter would be good to us or bad for us, and winter this particular winter had come early, and therefore our food supply was exhausted, depleted that is, rather quickly. When Little-eyes and I returned back to the cave the following evening, we had told in our symbolic way: expressed at the Banana Cave that is, to the entire Horde how Big-chest had killed the Eve People. And you could hear the laughter for miles around. I tried to explain how Big-chest had seen or sensed their movements, their evil objective, and their killing intent: as he always seemed to be able to sense survival quite well; he had a special quality of seeing through a person to his evil side, as he could see through us, thus, he could see through the Stone-People as well. I explained how one of the men stayed to fight him, trying to outstare Big-chest, and got kicked into the fire, and died. They all shook their heads in wonderment, we were not the smartest of the inhabitants of earth, but that was sure dumb we all thought, no vocal language was needed for that understanding or response. I think Big-chest had taken his trophy to his cave in our area, and was having a formal meal at this time. We liked anyone who could out smart the Stone-People I suppose, they were smug and we were helpless to them most of the time; they had well groomed weapons, and we had simply rocks and some clubs, along with a few sharpened stones, as they now were being called, knifes, up to the appearance of the Stone-People, they were just tools. And so it felt good if anything, good to see the odds turn for once, and to be frank, they didnt turn much, if ever in our favor after that episode. But our surprise would come in the morning: --yes, we would not be forgotten for once.

Morning

In the morning when several of us looked out of our cave entrances, in the center of the canyon below our cliff dwellings, as we often did to be sure we were safe from man or beast, in the open area in the valley below us, we saw half a lion torn open, lying in the center of our domain, for us, it was a treasure, a gift, a donation if anything, and all of us quickly ran to eat what meat Big-chest had left for us. Big-chest was not always so generous, or kind, but for some odd reason, he knew we were starving for some protean, and our bodies were starting to show our ribs. Aimless to say, this never happened againnot in such a quantity, but we all gave Big-chest a super big smile as we walked proudly out of our canyon-caves and ate the raw meat [for he appeared standing erect by a cave entrance observing the feast he provide; yes, some of us even were tarring at the red meat, animal protein, liken to wolfs.

12

The Hermit by the Sea

It was a short period of time from when Big-chest appropriated the lion [took it from the Stone-Builders and we all ate the meat, when I joined the Horde in the valley on a crisp morninga morning that told me, the seasons were about to change, thus, leading into spring; I could see my breath: it was so brittle, so I knew winters end was near. There was great commotion in the valley below, as there often was when someone or something new came about to celebrate, I had noticed from my cliff dwelling a gathering of the Horde, looking down, I quickly dashed along the sides of the cliff until I reached the floor of the valley to see what it was, as did Little-eyes, as I had woke him, trying to explain a happening was taking place.

Thin-hips of the Horde [Sister to Moss

When I reached the bottom and many of the folk were going to and fro, some with sad and hungry faces, very sad posture, I made my way through several folks now gathered around this one section of the cliff; old-Moss, the Hermit by the Sea, was laying dead, his sister, Thin-hips, was there pacing, walking back and forth, kind of chanting, humming something, sounds on top of soundsdeath had waxed his face I noticed. Ol d Moss was the oldest folk I had ever known, ever heard of. He must have been 60 or 65 years oldI doubt Big-chest was that old. No one ever lived that long, no one that is but Moss, I suppose. You could tell by looking at him, half his death was caused by starvation, the other by his long walk back to the Valley of the Caves, the strenuous walk; a walk many took to come back when they felt their time was short on this ground, like some fish, we all seem to know our dying ground; he came from the far off place, called the Great Cliffs by the Sea. I had only seen him when I was a kid and then once or twice coming and going, within a twenty-year period. He lived in the sand hills far from the Horde as I was saying, to the extreme East, and not far from there to the south was the Great Sea and the cliffs he always told his sister about, much larger than ours, higher than ours hed say. He add, this place was somewhere between the Sea, and the cliffs, and the strait, and thi s valley was a flat area, plateau, this is where he wondered off too often, or so hed claim, upon his return. He knew my father quite well, Long-arms, and did visit him, it was always when I was gone it seemed. They appeared to get along quite well, as one might expect, two strange folks to say the least; not sure what they had in common, matter of fact, if anything, one was lazymy father, the other, Moss, was quite active I heard.

The Great Sea

But he did bring back information to his sister, who shared it with us, and of course hed tell other people also of his journeys, or try to describe them best he could, and we were all quite interested in his talesit was entertainment: yes he was a man of tales, I guess in one way I admired him for that, it was almost like some of the occupations the Stone-Builders had, or called occupations, which were really doing things by order of their king and getting fed by someone else because of the kingstrange. Thus, Moss was our entertainer, and Moss did get fed by most of the Hordes residents for doing so, I think theyd call him in to their cave to hear him talk, or draw pictures, or act out his strange adventures. Half the time we never knew what he was saying, but then, so what and it was amusement. Everyone liked him, and so did I.

Citizen Video Video Store Review

When I was a kid, my family moved around a lot. We lived in California, Maine, and Virginia, and each time we'd head to a new destination, we'd usually drive. This crisscrossing of the entire country makes up a bulk of the illuminating memories of my life.

In that last gasp of true regionalism in America (the late 60's to mid-70's), I had the good fortune to experience a place of unique differences. The flavors of the south, the undeveloped orange groves of California, and the raw beauty of Maine. All of the sprawling land between these places was equally interesting and unique. This was the pre-plugged in world. Sure, we had TV, but due to the lack of cable, internet, and xeroxed strip-malls, the differences between regions were more marked than their similarities.

Times have certainly changed. The America we engage with has become increasingly bereft of original voices. What creativity there is that surfaces is usually out of reach. It's either grossly out-pr iced (think, theater tickets and fine dining) or doesn't show up on the radar (zine/blog writing, unsigned bands). Waxing nostalgic for the old days is all well and good, but it only goes so far. What's needed are people who turn their attention towards their passions and who ask themselves what they can actually do about it.

Holly Jones, owner of the South Park video rental store, Citizen Video, is one of those people. On a recent visit, we discussed her store, its vision, and the part it plays in her ongoing response to the homogenization of culture, economics, and life.

Holly is an artist, and although she has a background in photography, she has no formal training in film. The concept for Citizen Video came to her while visiting the Alphaville video store in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was there and it just popped into my head. It was one of those AH-HA moments. This intuitive moment was inspiration enough, and realizing that San Diego was lacking this type of an outlet, the idea for the store was born. Taking the inspiration from Alphaville to organize the films by director, she then used her designer and artist's eye to create the space. Her aesthetic is evident as you approach the store.

The blue and green color scheme, with stencil art in the windows and on the walls, is inviting and enticing. There is a comfort and warmth to the interior which is matched by Holly's personality. You get the sense of rightness between place, purpose and person.

In discussing the vision and mission of Citizen Video, Holly is very clear. We want to provide a way to get the unheard voices in cinema more well-known. In San Diego there is a tendency for people to try to not make waves. We thought we'd step outside of that and not be afraid to come from the left and the outside, because that's who we are. Citizen Video is an example of a business that seems tailor-made for its community.

About South Park, Holly says, As soon as I s aw the neighborhood, I fell in love with it. I wanted to figure out a way to make a living here while giving back and adding to the community. The ongoing themes of our discussion were community and outreach. In addition to staging genre-based film trailer shows at The Whistle Stop, they have begun hosting monthly screenings of movies with a theme, followed by group discussion.

One catches the palpable desire Holly and her employees have to promote cinema and help inform people how to approach it. She is, however, quick to point out that they don't want to appear elitist. We struggle with the perceived elitism of art-house cinema. We aren't film snobs, but we also realize the need to provide people with choices. Holly sees the broad acceptance of a narrow range of mainstream choices as a part of a larger pattern. Its not just in cinema, its also in things like our eating habits. We crave the familiar and will accept anything as long as it is known to us. I feel its a s ymptom of a general numbing effect at work in our society. This nationwide march toward ever greater levels of homogeneity is not some abstract concept.

Its a living reality, one that we can see at work on any day of the week. Try to find a locally owned coffee shop. See if you can get any truly underground literature at your mega-bookstore. Peruse the choices at any of your video rental/retail chains. What you'll come up with will be the same choices available from coast to coast, and by their ubiquity, our intellectual palette is diminished.

Holly Jones strikes me as a person who has come up with a valid and workable response to this situation. Find a need, fill it, and reach out to your community with knowledge, an open mind, and love.

Bridal Shower Party Planning and Bachelorette Ideas

The best time to begin the Bridal Shower Party planning is a time long before the wedding. This way you dont get overly stressed out about planning so many events in order to have a traditional wedding.

Typically the Bridal Shower is seen as the alternative or opposite to the bachelor Party. Although more and more these days the Bridal Shower is hosted by both the bride and groom and later on the bride and groom each has their own bachelor and Bachelorette Party. This way the bride and groom can invite people that may not be able to come to the wedding to their Shower and allow them the chance to celebrate in earnest without feeling guilty about missing the wedding.

Be sure to send out the invitations to the Bridal Shower long in advance of the Party. To give everyone invited a chance to RSVP just as they would for the wedding and to clear their schedules if they are coming. Also the Bridal Shower isnt as big an affair as the wedding and its meant to celebrate the brides coming wedding, so try not to have it so involved that you need to charge guests for arriving or a plate or something like that. Keep the meal easy and something that you can put together yourself without too much cost. A salad bar is great or a buffet of light snacks and coffee. This way guests will feel like theyve gotten to eat and you dont have to worry about hurting feelings with a meal fee.

There is always a gift opening period at every Bridal Shower. As you open gifts remember to keep the tag that came with it attached or stuffed in the box. That way you know who brought what and you can send them a thank you card later on with actual details about what you liked in the gift.

Diego Rivera Murals: The Famous Rivera / Rockerfeller Dispute

In 1933, the famous New York Rockefeller family commissioned Diego Rivera to paint a mural on the wall of the new RCA centre. The theme for the wall was to be new frontiers, and it was Nelson A. Rockefeller himself who wanted the painting to force people to stop and think about its message. The finished product depicted a number of scenes that referred to socially relevant events of the time. However, there was one element of the mural that the Rockefellers deemed too controversial and Rivera was asked to change the prominent face of a well-known political figure. What began as an effort to bring an eye-catching and thought provoking work of art to the Rockefeller Centre soon turned into a major conflict that would involve America's richest family, Mexico's most famous artist, and the entire American public.

Diego Rivera murals had gained huge attention in the artist's home country of Mexico. The task of creating a painting on one of America's most famous landmarks, however, promised to be the job that would bring Rivera international fame. It is said that, initially, the Rockefeller family, who favoured a more modern style of art, wanted Henri Matisse or Pablo Picasso to handle the enormous task, but because the two artists were unavailable for hire, Diego Rivera was approached. Seizing the great opportunity, Rivera accepted the commission and immediately began work on the large mural.

Although the Rockefeller family had put forward the idea for the theme new frontiers, Rivera disapproved with the Western world's embrace of free enterprise. Choosing instead to follow his own political beliefs, Rivera painted scenes that depicted the modern worker confronted by a symbolic junction of industry, capitalism, socialism and science. The newest of the Diego Rivera murals was provisionally called Man at the Crossroads Looking with Hope and High Vision to the Choosing of a New and Better Future. The mural was spectacular and achieved Nels on Rockefeller's goal of creating a work that was arresting and inspiring. Among some of the influential personalities portrayed on the canvas were Jean Harlow, Charlie Chaplin, Edsel Ford and the famous Russian communist leader Vladimir Lenin.

Upon completion of the mural, Rivera revealed his work to the Rockefellers, but their response was not what he had expected. When Nelson Rockefeller adamantly demanded that Rivera remove the image of Lenin and replace it with the face of another historically influential leader, Rivera refused and the mural was subsequently covered for an entire year. Although many American citizens protested to what they perceived to be artistic censorship, the painting would never see the light of day in the States and it was eventually chiseled off the wall at Rockefeller's request.

Objecting to having his work censored, Diego Rivera later reproduced the mural in its original form on the interior wall of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Me xico City. His new painting was as grand and thought provoking as the original, but Rivera chose to call this new version, Man Controller of the Universe. Today, this most controversial of the Diego Rivera murals is still displayed in Mexico City and many a fan of Rivera still dispute the Rockefeller family's decision to prevent the work from being viewed.

Wintergreen

As we drove along the dirt road north of our farm one Sunday afternoon, the color of the sky reminded me of Mom's silver cream and sugar servers when they were tarnished and needed to be polished again.

Since morning, the sky had been cloudy, but now at mid-afternoon, the clouds had grown much thicker and darker. Earlier in December we had gotten a little snow. Several forty-degree days had melted most of it, and the landscape was a combination of dun-colored grass, black tree branches and the russet color of certain oak leaves.

Every year in December, Dad and I went on a Christmas tree expedition, and we were on our way now over to what we called our 'other place' to cut a tree. During the summer, I made frequent trips to the other place, a second farm my parents owned that was about a mile away, to help Dad with the haying or just to tag along when he checked on the corn or the oats or the soybeans.

But after school started, I rarely went to the other place, and it always took me by surprise how different it looked in the winter. Instead of green alfalfa and timothy and clover waving in a warm south breeze, what had grown back after third crop was now brown stubble that trembled in the face of a north wind. The fields were strangely silent now, too, without the songs of meadowlarks and bobolinks, and the bobwhite quail which lived in the narrow section of woods lining the road.

We were only about five minutes into our journey when Dad shifted the pickup truck down into first gear and then eased into the field driveway. The rutted track that ran along the edge of the hayfield was so bumpy that a merry jingling came from the glove compartment -- probably a few bolts and washers, along with a couple of wrenches and maybe a screwdriver or two. When you're a farmer, you never know when yo u might need a wrench or a screwdriver or a bolt.

Is it going to snow, Daddy? I asked. Now that we had gotten past the trees lining the road, the sky had opened in front of us again.

Dad leaned forward to look up through the windshield.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance, he replied.

How much?

My father shrugged. Don't know. Maybe quite a bit. Wind's out of the east. And that usually means well get at least enough to shovel. Could be a lot more, though.

When we reached the pine plantation at the other end of the field, Dad turned the truck around, driving forward a few feet then backing up, then driving forward and then back again, forward and back, until we were facing in the direction we had come. He let the engine idle for a few seconds before shutting it off.

Daddy? I said, as we started walking toward the rows of planted red pine. When do you think it will start to snow?

Dad stopped and tipped his head back. Soon, he sai d, that wind feels raw and damp.

When my father said 'soon,' I was not expecting it to start snowing within the next ten minutes. At first, while we were cutting the tree we had selected, only a few random flakes drifted to the ground. By the time we reached the truck and had securely stowed our Christmas tree in the back, it was already snowing harder.

If it keeps up like this all night, you won't have school tomorrow, Dad said as he started the truck. He slowly let out the clutch, and soon we were retracing our route along the field driveway. He turned on the windshield wipers, and with each pass -- clickety-snick, clickety-snick -- the wipers cleared an arc through the wet flakes plastered to the glass.

After we had pulled onto the dirt road, Dad shifted into second gear, although when we reached the 'Y' -- where you co uld either turn left to go toward our farm, or right to go toward the house that had at one time been part of our other place -- he shifted into first gear again.

Hope we make it up the hill, he said, glancing at me. Wet snow makes the road kind of slick.

It was touch and go for a few seconds when the back wheels started spinning, but finally we reached the point where the hill leveled off. Trees grew on both sides of the road here, and to the right, a steep bank gave rise to a small wooded hillside.

Look, Dad said, pointing toward the bank. He inched over to the side of the road and stopped.

I peered through the curtain of falling snow. The bank looked pretty much the same as it always had -- exposed tree roots, patches of moss and bare spots where flat sandstone rocks had slid toward the road.

What do you see? I asked.

Wintergreen, Dad answered. He shut off the truck and opened the door.

Wintergreen?

The first time I had tast ed wintergreen, I decided that it was my favorite flavor. Peppermint was a little too sharp, although candy canes at Christmas were all right. Spearmint didn't taste like much of anything. Wintergreen, it seemed to me, was just right. In my opinion, Teaberry gum was the best, with wintergreen Lifesavers following as a close second.

Dad liked wintergreen too. Lifesaver books were popular gift exchanges at school for our Christmas party, and if the person who had drawn my name gave me a Lifesaver book, I would trade with other kids who had also gotten books. Sometimes I managed to acquire several extra rolls of wintergreen. Then I would share them with Dad. I thought Teaberry gum was better than candy be cause the taste lasted longer, but Dad preferred Lifesavers. Gum, he said, stuck to his dentures.

During the summer, every time I went to town with Dad to grind feed, I hoped he would buy a package of my favorite candy or gum. Not at the feed mill, of course. They didn't sell Teaberry gum or Lifesavers at the feed mill. But if we went to the restaurant for pie while we waited for our feed, or if Mom had asked Dad to pick up a couple of things at the grocery store, I would try to talk him into buying some gum or candy.

Going to the feed mill with Dad was a summertime activity, however, and there were long stretches during the school year when I never even saw a package of Teaberry gum or a roll of Lifesavers, much less had any in my possession.

So what was Dad talking about when he had stopped the truck and said, wintergreen?

I stared at the embankment and then at the hill beyond but I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. I shut the truck door be hind me just as Dad scrambled nimbly up the bank into the woods.

It's growing all over here, he said, pointing to the ground. They've got berries, too.

I struggled up the bank behind him to get a closer look. Underfoot were small plants with shiny green leaves.

That green stuff is wintergreen? I said.

My father nodded.

Like what they use to make gum?

Yup. Here. Taste.

He reached down and picked a couple of small, pinkish-red berries, popping one into his mouth and handing one to me.

I sniffed the berry. It smelled like wintergreen, all right, but I wasnt one bit sure about eating the thing.

Taste it, Dad urged. You'll be surprised.

So, I ate the berry. It had a strange consistency -- sort of dry and mushy, all at the same time. . .and then my mouth was filled with the marvelous taste of wintergreen. The same as my favorite gum, but different, too. More delicate.

It's good! I exclaimed, grinning. Then I frowned . How come we haven't seen it before?

Usually too much snow by this time, Dad said.

What about in the summer, though?

Too much underbrush and other green things.

And this is really the stuff they use in gum? I asked.

Dad took his cap off, slapped it against his leg to rid it of snow and then put it back on his head.

Well. . .they probably don't go into the woods and pick wild wintergreen. People probably raise it and sell it, and I think they might use the leaves rather than the berries, but yes, this is the stuff.

By now the snow was falling so hard it made a hissing noise as it struck the copper-colored oak leaves above us. Unlike other trees, some of the oaks, I had noticed, keep their leaves until spring.

How do you know so much about wintergreen? I asked.

Oh, Dad said, when we were kids, we used to pick it so we could make ice cream.

I turned to look at him. Ice cream?

Our kind of ice cream, anyway. A lit tle dish of snow with winter-green berries mixed in.

Suddenly I struck upon a wonderful idea.

I know! I can try some right now.

I took off my mitten, picked a few wintergreen berries and scooped a small handful of fluffy, fresh snow. I put the berries in the snow, and -- well -- I have to admit it was pretty tasty.

I put my mitten back on. Didn't you have real ice cream when you were growing up, Dad?

My father smiled. Sure -- sometimes. Not store bought, though. We made our own with a hand-cranked ice cream freezer. But that was mostly in the summertime. We thought wintergreen ice cream was an awful lot of fun.

Dad had been the middle child among several older brothers, an older sister, and three younger sisters. My grandparents had worked as cooks in a lumber camp in northern Wisconsin in the early 1900s. Many years ago, long before I was born, Dad had made his living cutting pulp wood.

Daddy? How did you see the wintergreen from th e road? I asked.

My father hesitated before answering. I didn't see it. Not today, at least.

I stopped trying to adjust my mitten so the thumb lined up like it was supposed to and turned my full attention toward Dad.

Remember last fall, when the county forester came out here? he asked.

Yeah, I remember.

Just on the other side of the small wooded hill was a two-acre stand of tall red pine with a couple of rows of white pine next to the road. Dad said the trees were among the oldest of the plantations in the county that had been planted just after the Great Depression to keep the sandy soil from eroding. Nearly every year, the forester would come out to check on them. One year he used Dad's pine trees to demonstrate a brand new trimming device to foresters from other counties.

Well, Dad continued, while we were out here, I decided to take a little walk. I don't get much of a chance just to walk around back here.

And that's when you saw the wintergreen?

Dad nodded. I was waiting for the right opportunity to show it to you.

He turned back toward the truck. It'll be dark soon. We'd better get home. The cows are waiting to be milked.

As we slid down the embankment, I glanced over my shoulder.

Wintergreen.

Growing in the woods not far from my house.

And in that instant, I knew gum and candy would never again taste quite the same.

What is a girl to do?

Who am I? I am Cyndi Katel, your average single mother, disabled, no source of income I did something I always wanted to do but was afraid. People said I should not do it yet digging my heels and jumping onto the computer, I began working. After all, Oprah had an entire show on women who took the first step and became successful businesswomen. Therefore, I began Five Star Nights Anti-Aging Skin Care line in my kitchen, living r oom and on the computer with my daughters cheering me on.

Cyndi Katel is the founder of Five Star Nights. Cyndi attended college as a single parent and graduated with honors while in her late 30's. I thank my mom Rigmore Katel for all her support during my college years as an older student studying pre-med. Cyndi began this company after being fired from her job due to her disability and saw this as one door closing and another door opening.

She and her daughters created Five Star Nights, an Organic Natural Anti-aging SkinCare line. My eldest daughter Misha is a vegetarian and insisted all items be vegan, so they are. Kristin is the computer expert. She and I both race to the computer as she chats with all her friends, acts in plays and movies. We created a new family business who will become the beauty company that tells you the truth.
