Hire a Magician for Your Party: Things to Check before You Book

Magicians are very popular at evening events - whether it's a private dinner party or a prestigious client hospitality event it's essential that you pick the right one. If you search the internet for Magicians you will find hundreds and may become bewildered by the choice.

As hiring a Magician is something people don't often have to do it is likely you will be booking cold - that is, you don't necessarily know their work so have to ascertain their suitability for your party based on what you are presented with.

A Magician's website is important. Forget about how snazzy the design is - look for evidence that they are a performer of a good standard. Photos of them working, references from previous clients and the sort of venues they currently work are very important. If the Magician lists his clients as low brow family restaurants it is likely that he is not as successful as one that is being flown around the world to perform at five star hotels by corporate clie nts.

When you are looking at the photographs on a Magicians site have a look to see if the people watching look happy or if they look disinterested. A Magician is going to put only his best photos on his site so if the best he can do is a few badly taken snaps and the audience are all looking bored that says a lot!

Although you can tell a lot about any type of entertainer from their website it is worth phoning them up for a chat. Some bookers fear this as they think they are going to get a hard sell. This is possible but most professional Magicians are likely to be happy to talk over the particulars of your event with no obligation at all.

Sometimes bookers look to see if the Magician is a member of a trade body such as the International Brotherhood of Magicians or the Magic Circle. It is very important to note that this in no way says anything about the standard of the performer. If they are a member of these organisations it means that they have passed so me basic criteria and paid a subscription fee. The large majority of members of these organisations are part time or amateur Magicians. Similarly, many very respected professionals are not members for one reason or another.

Some questions you may want to ask your prospective Magician:

How long have you been performing?
In the event of you being sick on the date of the event will you be able to get a substitute performer at short notice?
Do you have public liability insurance? (Very important)

Also you should ask if they specialise in the type of event you are organising. If you are after a close up Magician you should ideally get someone who mainly does that. Someone whose income mainly comes from childrens entertainment is almost certainly going to be the wrong choice for you.
