And although he did not consider himself homosexual despite sleeping with young men, he frequently engaged in severe poofter bashings. Bestiality was also considered to be another favourite pastime.

He, along with Michael James Murdoch, Leslie Joseph Murphy, Michael Patrick Murphy and Gary Steven Murphy, committed the worst possible Crime against an individual when they degraded, terrorised and vi olated a young woman by the name of Mrs Anita Lorraine Cobby, a former Miss Western Suburbs title holder. Her prolonged brutal assault and repeated sexual attacks, including repeated anal penetration, culminating in her death, traumatised the nation.

Im actually familiar with this case from a journal I read and it is still considered one of the worst Crimes against an individual after all these years because of the brutality involved. The Port Arthur massacre when that mentally ill fellow, Martin Bryant, slaughtered thirty-five defenceless people in 1996 , and also those backpacker murders by Ivan Milat were at the top of the list too, the priest notes. You know, I believe that God will punish those responsible at the end of their sentences here on earth.

The detailed brutality of the whole incident in question, particularly that of John Travers on Anita Cobby, was so disturbing that many people found it difficult to comprehend. In the lead-up to the horrific events the practices that the man with a tattooed teardrop under his eye committed were in themselves beyond understanding. In hindsight they would have been a clear

indication of things to come but the detectives only later found out that he was no ordinary textbook murderer. The freak, John Raymond Travers, was rePorted to have had a fixation where he would mount farm animals and during h is climax hold its head back and slice the defenceless creatures throat for his own sadistic satisfaction.

Anita Cobby was at the wrong place at the wrong time, as one officer put it. For some unknown reason she decided to walk from Blacktown train station that evening despite usually organising a lift home. The attackers had been drinking heavily at their regular haunt, the Doonside Hotel, and their stolen Holden was running low on petrol. They sighted the young woman walking alone along Newton Road and two of the perpetrators grabbed her and forced her into the car. Not only did they steal her money to buy fuel at a gas station while Anita was pinned down naked on the floor in the back, but even prior to this they had already physically and sexually assaulted her.

She was repeatedly beaten and forced to perform oral sex, sometimes with more than one individual at one time, bashed throughout the ordeal and the night was still young. The victim was almost certai nly aware that she would be killed during this torturous pack rape after she was dragged through a barbed wire fence and into the Boiler Paddock (which held old boiler cows) off Reen Road at Prospect on the night of February 2nd, 1986.

On 10th June 1987 coincidentally Stems birthday the jury returned a guilty verdict (with the exception of Travers who had already pleaded guilty) and on 16th June the criminals were sentenced. Throughout the trial there appeared to be no signs of regret and the malicious pack was said to be smirking behind their hands.

Justice Maxwell then sentenced each man to life imprisonment and added: The circumstances of the murder of Mrs Anita Lorraine Cobby prompt me to recommend that the official files of each prisoner should be clearly marked never to be released.

Im sure God is looking after that child now we can be grateful for that much at least, the priest prays.

Yes, and I refuse to believe that a loving God wouldnt do so after all, the young woman did nothing wrong except throw caution into the wind on one careless occasion. She was Crucified just like so many others for an ambiguous Crime.

I understand your point though, the priest acknowledges. Some people can have a rough upbringing and find a way out of the darkness unassisted while others create more darkness for themselves, especially if influenced by bad company.

Yes, and there are no boundaries on either side of the equation, Gee supplements. You only have to look at that spoilt Port Arthur gunman to see that no matter what the upbringing or how wealthy a person is perceived to be, in the end its intellect and respect that has the last say.
