Hero's Journey Part 1 and 2 (of 17)

The heros journey is the screenwriting template. Screenwriters can use it to write effective screenplays. Below are a few of the elements of each stage of the journey.

The Call to Adventure

Heros True Nature. We learn of the heros true nature. In Gladiator (2000), Maximus takes time to feel the tall grass.

Heros Ordinary World. Usually, we meet the hero in his Ordinary World very early on. In War of the Worlds (2005), we meet Ray Ferrier at work and at home.

The Antagonism. The antagonism is referenced if not actually introduced. In Star Wars(1977), the first sequence introduces the antagonist and the need for a resolution.

Heralds Journey. The bringer of the Call to Adventure. In The Matrix (1999), Trinity tells Neo he is really searching for the Matrix.

The Call to Adventure, which is sometimes explicit. In Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the government agents, Marcus and Indy explicitly detail the Call to Adventure.

Refusal of t he Call

Warnings. There are warnings from mentors or others. In Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Marcus warns Indy about the dangers.

Interdictor. A person or higher authority may inhibit the hero. In The Incredibles (2004), both the government and Mr Incredibles boss give an interdiction.

Unbearable Antagonism. A significant antagonism pushes the hero beyond refusal into acceptance. In Get Carter (1971), Garters brother is murdered.
