Inner gigantic-walls

Bold they stand, on the sands of Maltaby the Mediterranean

She speaks, Mother Earth, Goddess Of Fertility, to all life

From the branches of the tree of life, Her offshoots spring

The farmer, the fisherman, the village, Even the spirits of the dead

They are all here, in the sands and stones,

Statuettes, carvings, alters

Even the beautiesthe women have not Left, with lovely faces and breasts

The Spirits

Darkened by the temple shadows Are reflecting images

Imagesrituals of Purification

Slabs on slabs, shrines high The spirits remember

(Some have never died

Roofed over, like a dome Sacrifices with burnt bones

[The Spirits remember

4.

Sacrifices

We must die tonight, whispered Tarxien to Mnajdra

Seize them! was a voice afar Whirl them aloft

Sprinkle rams blood on them Place them on the alter!

(burn them with the blood)

All to appease our Mother Earth, Goddess of all

(Who gave us birth?)

And the priests cried, as their blood flowed, And they died

But the residue of their spirit was still Well and alive

5.

Oracle

The Oracle was called upon to intercede, To give advice

No one could figure out why the blood From the alter never dried

It is the blood of the priests, their Spirits are alive

(The citizens cried)

The inhabitants couldnt put out The turbulent fire

The Spill, that the Mother Goddess Cast upon them was strong

And the two spirits still dwell At Ggantijas Temple

Where, each morni ng Just before sunrise

Can be seen on the alter stand Wet and moistened, warm blood
