Currently on order are some army trucks, which will run on Fuel Cells. The Army is also funding research on Tanks, which will be able to do the same. The United States Air Force Research Lab is working on fuel cell aircraft and the US Navy on ships and submarines.
Why are these initiatives being sought? Why is it so critical to move the ball forWard with these new technologies? If the US military has more fuel in reserves than the god almighty, then why do we need fuel cells? Well there are several reasons;
1.) Future World Shortages due to Supply and Demand and China and India coming on line with huge needs for fuel.
2.) Costs of Fuel in the Future.
3.) Logistical Supply Chain Needs to move the fuel in with the Robotic Fighting Force.
Imagine the cost to move tanker truckloads of fuel by aircraft, ship and truck to the front lines and imagine the risk in trying to deliver it. If you are driving a load of fuel in a fuel truck you are about the most favorable target to your enemy and that does not say much for your life expectancy does it?
If fuel in the future becomes scarce or the enemy intercepts fuel shipments, destroys refineries or otherwise disrupts the flow of fuel, well then fuel cell technology may be a Gods send as your convoy and troops will not be parked on the side of the road as sitting ducks bone dry of fuel. Think on this in 2006.
