If you are just starting out playing Backgammon, chances are your first question is what are the rules of Backgammon? There are many places you can get the rules of Backgammon and study them. Backgammon rules are fairly simple, but as you get more into the game you wi ll certainly discover that the strategies of Backgammon are not quite so simple.
To begin the game, pieces can only move in one direction and that is from the opponent's inner table through the opponent's outer table, back through the player's outer table and finishing in the player's inner table. White pieces move in a clockwise direction and black pieces move in an anti-clockwise direction. Since the inner tables point towards the light then it should be very easy to figure out who sits where at the table.
The points on the board are numbered from 1 to 12 on either side starting with the first square of the inner table and finishing with the last square of the outer table. On the black's side you have to position 2 white pieces on point one, five black pieces on the number six square, three black pieces on the eight square and five white pieces on the 12 squares. Both sides should mirror each other exactly. If you don't want to play for stakes then just ignore the cube and play the game. This is usually decided up front if you want to play for points or for money.
To start the game all you have to do now is roll the dice with each player rolling at the same time. If a double is rolled then you have to roll again until you get a number of one die higher than the other. The player with the highest number starts the game by moving whatever numbers were rolled by both dice.
