Yikes! There's a Bald Eagle Sitting on My Arm!

Ive always had an interest in Birds and over the years had many different types of Birds as pets. At one point I had 6 living with me and although I enjoyed them all, my one adventure with a bald eagle while at the zoo once, stands out as one of my favorites.

On this pArticular day I had taken my three children to the zoo. After several hours of seeing and learning about all kinds of Animals, we finally came to the bird show. Whew! It was great to sit down. The show was great but the final bird brought out was a full-grown bald eagle. What a magnificent creature he was. Seeing one up close has much more impact than seeing one on TV.

The show was over, or so we thought. Without warning the bird handler walked straight up to me and grabbed my arm and placed this very large and heavy bird on it. I was completely taken aback. After a split second of shock, I began to admire this magnificent bird. The first thing I noticed was the talons wrapped around my arm and then I looked straight up at his beak and thought to my self about the damage he could do with that.

What really struck me the most was how regal he was and he had an intense unwavering stare. I realized I was experiencing one of those once in a lifetime things that most people never will. It was thrilling. The kids were sitting there in awe.

The bird handler finally took him off my arm and sat him on a fence post where he then produced from his pocket a live mouse. This is the pArt my boys loved. The eagle tore into this mouse and ate it, tail, hair and all. They talked about this for weeks.

I did some research recently into the current state of the bald eagle and was happy to find their numbers have increased so much that they have been taken off the endangered species list and are now classified as threatened.

Its no wonder we see them on Inspirational Posters. They are magnificent survivors.
